Flipped Classroom – The 21st Century Learning Model

Flipped Classroom – The 21st Century Learning Model

Flipped classroom, a 21st century learning model, where the traditional method of teaching new content is flipped from the classroom space to the home learning space, thus freeing up the classroom face time for meaningful discussions.

Why Flip?

Quality Time at School

Flip from Passive Listening to Active Learning.

The hours at school are made more meaningful when the content has already been viewed and grasped by the child at home. Now he is ready to engage in discussion and debate to apply the new knowledge/concept and establish it firmly in the mind.

Quality Time at Home

Flip from struggling alone with written homework to productive learning with family.

Viewing the content can become a family bonding time with parents also joining in. There could be a healthy discussion at home too. The student can note down his doubts and discuss with the teacher in class.

The not-so-well-liked task of applying the learning to written work is now shifted to classroom.

More Effective Pedagogy

Flip from LOTS to HOTS at school.

The Bloom’s Taxonomy pyramid is about the student moving from Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). In the traditional method, the LOTS like remembering, understanding happens in the classroom and the HOTS ranging from applying, analysing, evaluating and creating happens through assignments and projects at home.

Flipping brings the HOTS to school.

The students gain the guidance and facilitation of the teacher and the support of their peers in this phase.

Self-Paced Learning

Flip from missing important points to reviewing at one’s own speed.

While listening to the teacher in class, it is quite possible that a student may be pondering on some point and miss out on some important point that followed.

Now, the student can view and listen at his own pace.

He can listen multiple times, listen to particular parts of the content which are difficult to understand.

Empowerment

Flip from mere willingness to learn to Willing & Prepared to enhance knowledge

The teacher prepares the content, intentionally and painstakingly which ensures that all the students are aware of the basics of the concept and the key terminology. And this would empower the student.

Collaboration and Connect

Flip from just giving hi-fives to intellectual discussions.

All the students see the same content, but each brings in his own perspective. It widens their views and deepens their knowledge. This is collaborative learning at its best. And naturally strengthens the connect, the bond between teacher and student, between student and student.

‘Technology will not replace great teachers but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational.
